These are Vallalar’s own words, from Thiruvarutpa, his collected hymns, and from his prose writings. The Tamil is given exactly as printed in the editions on thiruarutpa.org and vallalar.org, which keep the old way of joining words in verse. The English lines are our renderings, written to carry the meaning rather than to translate word for word. His life and teachings have pages of their own.
Sayings of Vallalar
Short sayings of his that are often quoted, each with the passage it comes from and a link to the source. Where a saying is usually quoted in a shorter popular form, we say so.
“Only one who does not die is a true Sanmargi.” These are the closing words of a short note in which he says that the end of Sanmarga is nothing other than to make known the learning that does not die, and that one who dies has not reached the state of Sanmarga.
Upadesa Kurippugal (notes of his teachings), note 96, “Suddha Sanmarga Mudibu”, the end of Suddha Sanmarga
என்மார்க்கம் இறப்பொழிக்கும் சன்மார்க்கந் தானே.“This can be stopped, now: join with me. My path is the Sanmarga that ends death.” In this verse he tells the people of the world that he speaks as their kin, not their foe: they see the learned and the unlearned alike perish, yet they consent to death; his own mind does not consent to it at all.
Thiruvarutpa, Sixth Thirumurai, Gnanasariyai (Vaaypparai Aarththal), verse 26, closing lines. Project Madurai’s edition titles this poem “Maranamilap Peruvazhvu”.
புனைந்துரையேன் பொய்புகலேன் சத்தியஞ்சொல் கின்றேன்“You can live the great life that knows no death: see! I do not embellish, I tell no lie; I speak the truth.” The same poem calls again in verse 23: “மரணமிலாப் பெருவாழ்வில் வாழவம்மின் இங்கே”, come here and live the great life without death.
Thiruvarutpa, Sixth Thirumurai, Gnanasariyai (Vaaypparai Aarththal), verse 1, lines 6–7
“It is only with the key called Jeevakarunyam, compassion for living beings, that one can open the door of the upper house that is liberation, enter, and live in a bliss that never perishes.” The next sentence speaks of “சீவகாருணிய மென்கின்ற மோட்ச வீட்டுத் திறவுகோலை”, the key to the house of liberation that is Jeevakarunyam. This is the saying popularly quoted as “ஜீவகாருண்யமே மோட்ச வீட்டின் திறவுகோல்”: compassion for living beings is the key to the house of liberation.
Jeevakarunya Ozhukkam (prose)
“The discipline of the mind is this: to resolve in truth that the true God is one; …” In Thiruvarun Meymmozhi he speaks of this one true God, known by true knowledge, as “தனிப்பெருந்தலைமை அருட்பெருஞ்ஜோதியர்”, the Supreme Grace-Light, whose lordship is unique. The popular line “கடவுள் ஒருவரே, அவர் அருட்பெருஞ்ஜோதி ஆண்டவர்” sums up the two; it is not in his words.
Upadesa Kurippugal, note 100, “Sanmarga Peruneri Ozhukkam”, the discipline of the mind (karana ozhukkam); Thiruvarun Meymmozhi

Other sayings of his are given in full further down this page: the verse that begins “வாடிய பயிரைக் கண்டபோ தெல்லாம் வாடினேன்” (Whenever I saw a withered crop); the wish that all lives may live in joy, “எல்லா உயிர்களும் இன்புற்று வாழ” (May all lives live in joy); “சீவகாருணியமே கடவுள் வழிபாடு” (Compassion is the worship of God); and the Mahamantra.
His verses and prose
Whenever I saw a withered crop
“Whenever I saw a withered crop, I withered too. When I saw people worn thin by hunger, begging from house to house and still left hungry and faint, my heart trembled. When I saw before me those suffering from long illness, my heart shook. When I saw the poor, people of rare dignity whose hearts had grown faint, I grew faint with them.”
Thiruvarutpa, Sixth Thirumurai, Pillaip Peru Vinnappam, verse 62
Every life as one’s own

“Those who make no distinction at all, who think of every life as their own and rejoice within in claiming kinship with all: I have come to know that their hearts are the very place where my Lord dances as pure consciousness. My mind longs to serve at the feet of such wise ones.”
Thiruvarutpa, Sixth Thirumurai, Thanith Thiruvalangal, verse 2
Caste, creed and religion
“O Supreme Grace-Light, who made me understand at the very start that caste, creed and religion are false!”
Thiruvarutpa, Sixth Thirumurai, Arutperunjothi Agaval, lines 211–212
The path of non-killing
“O true Shiva, who told me again and again that the path of non-killing is the path of the Guru’s grace! O Shiva, who said: look on all lives alike, with a heart that holds them all, and give up every fault.”
Thiruvarutpa, Sixth Thirumurai, Arutperunjothi Agaval, lines 967–970
Hunger is a fire
“When the fire called hunger blazes inside the bodies of the poor, to quench it with food: that is Jeevakarunyam.”
Jeevakarunya Ozhukkam (prose)
Food without distinction
“Whatever the country, religion, caste or occupation of those who suffer from hunger, to relieve their hunger without lecturing or questioning them about the customs of their country, religion, caste or work; knowing that the light of God shines alike in every being, to look on all alike and relieve their hunger in a way that suits each one’s own way of life: that is Jeevakarunyam.”
Jeevakarunya Ozhukkam (prose)
Compassion is the worship of God
“Hence it is to be understood that for all beings whose understanding has awakened, Jeevakarunyam itself is the worship of God.”
Jeevakarunya Ozhukkam (prose)
Hold everyone as your own
“The discipline towards others is this: towards everyone, men and women alike, to set aside every distinction of caste, religion, creed, stage of life, sect, clan, family, scripture, country, and high and low, and to hold all as one’s own, as equals.”
Upadesa Kurippugal, notes of his teachings

“So that the darkness of impurity is cut away and all lives may live in joy, in this world and the next; so that the many bewildering paths, losing their way, are buried in the earth, and the one clear Suddha Sanmarga alone shines out: you made me dance in the street of grace that shows the Hall of Consciousness. You, the Supreme Grace-Light, are my Lord.”
